Valley Neighbors Organize for Safety Away from Police and Policing

Reimagine Community Safety

Los Angeles, CA, 8/01/2024: On August 6, 2024, from 430-8 pm, the Valley Justice Collective, in conjunction with The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and Somos Familia Valle, will gather at NoHo Park in North Hollywood to reimagine community safety in the San Fernando Valley. Our goal is to inspire everyday community members and empower them to get involved in local organizing already happening to eliminate police and policing in Los Angeles. There will be free food, live music, family activities, and the following featured speakers:

  • Kevin Perez of Somos Familia Valle

  • Taina Angeli Vargas, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Initiate Justice

  • Katherine Tattersfield

  • Godfrey Plata, LA Forward

This year, the event will be hosted by Angelica Duenas, former Congressional Candidate for the 29th District.

“The first Night Out for Safety and Liberation was launched by the Ella Baker Center in Oakland, CA in 2013 as an alternative to the more police-centric National Night Out, which pushes a narrative of "police-community partnerships" as the pathway to community safety.” -The Ella Baker Center. We will continue the tradition of highlighting the voices in this fight and providing space to come together.

The Valley Justice Collective is a grassroots organization that prioritizes community collaboration in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

Somos Familia Valle is a local LGBTQ+ community organization dedicated to support, empower, and mobilize families, and allies for racial, gender, and economic justice in the San Fernando Valley.

Angelica Dueñas is a progressive Democrat who is fighting against the corporately funded incumbent in California’s 29th Congressional District, which is located in the East San Fernando Valley.

The Ella Baker Center organizes with Black, Brown, and low-income people to shift resources away from prisons and punishment, and towards opportunities that make our communities safe, healthy, and strong.
