LA Wants Care, Not Cops
This event aims to reimagine community safety in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, CA, and to create a model for other areas. Our goal is to inspire people, expose them to new topics, and empower them to get involved in eliminating the need for police and policing in Los Angeles.
We invite local vendors, organizations, activists, and artists for a community block party to table at this event and speak directly to community members on how they embody safety and liberation.
Background
“Night Out for Safety and Liberation was first launched by the Ella Baker Center in Oakland, CA in 2013 as an alternative to the more police-centric National Night Out, which pushes a narrative of "police-community partnerships" as the pathway to community safety. Night Out for Safety and Liberation (NOSL) was sparked by the murder of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch captain. Too often, conversations about public safety revolve around policing and punishment; this has unfortunately led to decades of harm and disinvestments in our communities, as it has led to a massive expansion into police and prison budgets. We know that real public safety means having a living wage job, healthy food, healthcare, housing, education, and other health-affirming resources.” - The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights.
